Holiday Swag Fundraiser Returns

Again this fall, Denver Area Alumnae of Sigma Sigma Sigma will sell Holiday Swags. A photo flyer and order form will be distributed at the September meeting or you can access the information here.

Rebekah Ager will be taking the orders. She indicates that the swags are crafted with Pacific Northwest Evergreen. This year's style is a bit different with the pine cones being replaced with faux white snow berries and red holly berries. A bow is also included with each swag.

Once again, Out of Town delivery is available. To help defray delivery costs by Sigma sisters, swags can be picked up at a central delivery location TBA with no delivery cost, or delivered to your front door for $5 per address. If you have orders for yourself and family and friends, as long as all of your orders are delivered to one address, the cost for delivery will be only $5.

All orders must be received by October 26 to ensure delivery of our orders from the supplier by the first week of December. Checks are payable to Sigma Sigma Sigma.

Questions may be directed to Rebecca by e-mail or phone.

Founders Day Postponed, But Worth the Wait

Sixty women attended Founders Day at the Denver West Marriott after a snow cancellation moved the date from April 18 to May 2. Denver Area Alumnae celebrated with members of Eta Pi from Metropolitan State College.

A festive mood and a lovely luncheon set the stage for the Founders Day program and celebration.

Members recognized were Alumnae Recognition award winners Lynne Harrington and Pauline Stewart. In a bit of confusion, they received their certificates by mail and we were not able to surprise them with the awards. They expressed appreciation and accepted floral bouquets in their honor.

Denver Area Panhellenic award nominees Louise Jordan (Woman of the Year) and Joanne Detary (Alumnae Achievement) were also introduced and given floral bouquets.

Golden Violets were presented to Carol Jordan and Bobbie Smith.

Katie Scherping, who is serving on the Sigma Foundation Board, spoke about the Lori Dahm scholarship that we want to fully fund within two years. She encouraged donations and challenged us to meet the $11,000 needed. We successfully pledged or gave over $7,000 for the first year. Our goal should be realized!

Hostesses Terri Dimond, Carol Jordan and Jackie Goreham were thanked for their planning of such a wonderful day. We all left with the cookie centerpieces baked by Carol. And, many of us shopped the Sigma Store provided by Terri.

Sigma Receives Recognition from Denver Area Panhellenic

Two Tri Sigma sisters were recognized at the 2009 Denver Area Panhellenic Awards Luncheon, April 25. Our nominee for Woman of the Year is Louise Jordan and our Alumnae Achievement nominee is Joanne Detary.

Though our nominees were not selected as award winners, they represent us well and we are proud of their contributions to Sigma Sigma Sigma and their communities.

These ladies attended the luncheon with four other Alumnae members: Carolyn Wallisch, Judith Burkholder, Bobbie Smith and Clarissa Crozier.

A highlight of the luncheon was announcement of the sororities who contributed most to the 2009 scholarship fund. Sigma Sigma Sigma was recognized as having the largest percentage of members donate.

Sigmas Help at Children’s Hospital

Denver Area Alumnae continue to "Make a Child Smile" through their contributions of money and time to Colorado's new Children's Hospital in Aurora, Colorado.

The Sigma Sigma Sigma Foundation recently awarded Denver a grant that was used to provide a Pac-Man/Galage table top game for use in Children's Hospital Emergency Department. The game is highly popular and helps patients and families cope with the stress of the health care environment by providing developmentally appropriate, normalized play.

In addition, Denver alumnae, joined this year by collegiates from Eta Pi Chapter, set up well-stocked craft stations for patients and families waiting for appointments in different areas of the hospital. Young patients and their families spent time creating bright, cheerful scrapbooks, visors or door hangers that they could enjoy taking home after their appointment. For a brief moment children could forget how sick they are and enjoy something fun.

Participating Sigmas continue to feel that this annual project is one of the most moving and rewarding activities they do. Members are always left in awe of these very sick children and their families who face such overwhelming obstacles and still manage to have a smile for others.

DAP Workshop Successful

Nancy Craig was the single featured speaker at the DAP Workshop February 8. Craig is executive director for the Tri Sigma Foundation.

Many comments were made afterwards about how inspiring she was and what a great job she did in explaining why the Greek experience leverages women into top leadership posistions.

Craig shared her own experiences as well as those of her own children and friends. "She was most relevant for today's world and an outstanding representative for Tri Sigma and made us all who were there feel very proud we were Tri Sigmas," Carolyn Wallisch said.

Katie Halfman said, "She said that we should mention our leadership and service experiences in interviews and use that to 'sell' ourselves to potential employers. For example, as collegiate women we are offered many leadership experiences that are not offered to most women on campus. Planning events and service activities give us experiences that most MBA candidates do not get."

There were two breakout sessions after her speech. In the two workshops Carolyn attended many references to Craig were made in the discussions of Alumnae retention, recruitment and continuation of the Greek experience for a lifetime. Successful fundraiser ideas and ways to make our Greek organizations stand out in the community as positive contributors to our society were also shared.

Social Outing at Denver Center

Fifteen members, family and friends purchased tickets to attend "Girls Only – The Secret Comedy of Women" at Denver Center for Performing Arts at the Galleria Theatre. Lunch at Rock Bottom was planned before attending the show on January 17. The picture was taken the day of the event after the very funny and often hilarious comedy of two women reminiscing about growing up in the 70’s.

Denver Area Alumnae Chapter President, Carolyn White Wallisch, Iota, receives the Alumnae Chapter of the Year Award from Tri Sigma National President Laura Ward Sweet.

National Team Celebrates Mile High
Sigma Night with Denver Alums

Sigma Sigma Sigma National Officers, including the Executive Board and President, Laura Sweet, took a break from their December meetings at the Association of Fraternity Advisors Convention to join Denver Alumnae for A Mile High Sigma Night. After a group mixer and a yummy, home cooked Christmas potluck, Laura Sweet, along with Executive Board members Emily Ellis, Beth Deines, Lorin Phillips, Reatha Cox and Allison Swick each shared updates on the general status of Tri Sigma regionally and nationally. It brought the tremendous work of our organization and these wonderful officers into a more meaningful context for all in attendance.

The evening was such an exciting one for Denver Sigmas as we met one-on-one with our National Officers. The festivities ended when Laura presented the Denver Chapter with several National Awards, including the award for Alumnae Chapter of the Year! It just doesn’t get much better than that!
